Crashed Space Ships and Tech Gods

Okay I'm bored today so let's bash out a good original post on Technology and Deities in Greyhawk.

Greyhawk is full of contradiction when it comes to the functionality of technology in the setting. For example, black powder isn't supposed to work unless you're a deity like Murlynd, or if you're a paladin of Murlynd then you get an exception too. But in general it's an unwritten rule (for DM's personal preference) that anachronistic technology isn't supposed to work on Oerth. Until it does.

Crashed spaceships in the Barrier Peaks yield ray guns and robots. A City of the Gods and frozen automatons lay at the fringes of the Land of Black Ice. Futuristic sailing ships are caught in a tropical sargasso. Ancient artifact level machines and mechas stay hidden until found by adventurers. Gates to alternate Earths can be found that work both ways. I'm sure if Greyhawk had enjoyed an unbroken line of development from the 80's to present we'd have even more instances by now. The point is a variety of genre-mixing technology is there if a DM knows where to find it or if they want to keep it out of their medieval fantasy then no one is the wiser.

What if we ignore the Epoch of Magic and apply all the above examples as overt changes to the setting? Put another way, what if tech and magic mingled freely in Greyhawk? Perhaps an Epoch of Magi-tech. Well we might end up with a world more like Eberron I'd assume. Automaton/Robot "warforged" would become a viable PC race. Larger magitech monsters and vehicles would become more common blurring the line of science and necromancy. I'm imagining Final Fantasy type flying ships, larger golem-like machines leading sieges. Black powder weapons of course would lead to an explosion of crafting and alchemist class characters. None of these advances precludes magic users either, it only enhances them.

Deities would need a slight make over as well:
Murlynd would be the prototypical hero-god of magitech; the bar by which all adventurers are measured.
Boccob, Delleb and Zagyg certainly jump into the weird magic-tech mashup with even more futuristic arcane objects.
Hextor (and perhaps others like Heironeous) as god of war would lead in cutting edge machines of war both on land and at sea.
Moradin, Fotubo and their like would not be outdone in the crafting department though.
Gods like Xerbo, Zilchus and Bralm would encourage and profit off the tech's spread to common folk.
Stranger deities like Celestian, Tsolorandril and the entire Olman pantheon would also focus eyes to the stars way more than they do currently.
And I don't even want to think about Tharizdun paired with technology!

So yes, magic and tech in Greyhawk can make for an exciting fantasy world. It's all a matter of how far do you take it?

New Year Greyhawk Resolutions

I won't try and fool myself by making the same unsustainable or unattainable resolutions that everyone else makes. I'm pretty happy with life and have no urgent needs or complaints. With that in mind, I plan to make a few Greyhawk resolutions as I have always been a standard bearer for the setting in its heyday and now in its virtual dormancy. My list of project goals involving Greyhawk is daunting but nothing I haven't handled before:

1. Maintain 2-3 posts a week, here on Greyhawkery. This shouldn't be hard, though deciding on a topic has been challenging. Not as challenging however, as making a punchline for a comic each week. So less stress there. But finding any news or discussion on Greyhawk is not easy, gotta keep my eyes and ears open.
2. Write more articles.  Not just for the blog mind you, but mainly Canonfire, Oerth Journal or hell anyone else interested in collaborating. Part of the down-shift in doing the comic was so I could do more polished articles. I got my Ull series, Battles of the Flanaess, personal campaign articles, and more ideas to work on.
3. Promote Greyhawk. This is a nebulous task, but it involves encouraging others to write, run, or read Greyhawk. That is easily done through #1 but proactively I go to other sites to support fellow authors. Greyhawk may be off the radar right now, but it has shown that it is like a comet always coming back around, and this could be sooner than later.
4. The Comic. My well was starting to run dry, and after #300 and Needfest I was exhausted. Despite all that I still have enough parody storylines to put something out in the coming year. Expect more Gods in Space than anything else (Sorry, Holian).
5. Greyhawk Fiction. This could be in the same category as #2, but my format is still up in the air. All I know is I want to do a serial rather than bombard you readers with one long novella. Maybe add some art with it. We shall see. Greyhawk is sorely lacking in good fiction. Part of #3 is driving for more people to write short stories or serials about Greyhawk. I think this is the next best thing to actually playing Greyhawk for those without the access and with official Greyhawk at a stand-still now has never been a better time to write original stories.

Blog Debut! Greyhawk Comic #297

Another Greyspace saga has begun! I'm sure most of you will see where this storyline is going. For those not familiar with Gods in Space be sure to check out the comics section above. Now onto other pressing matters:

1. Thanks for tuning into Greyhawkery. With this blog I hope to unleash all the stuff in my twisted gamer mind that I don't have time to do in just a webcomic. Naturally new Greyhawk relevant news is scant these days, but you'll be surprised what I can dig up, plus there is always new fan works out there and plenty of nostalgic stories to tell. Greyhawk is not going away, so help me make this blog more entertaining. Any ideas or insights? Comment here, or send an email to mortellan (at) gmail.com
2. Now, many of you readers of the World of Greyhawk Comic have been following my long standing cultist mystery. The answer is almost here with only 3 more issues till #300. For those of you who are reading this for the first time, I've been building up clues to two characters' identities; that of two well-known canonical Greyhawk NPCs.  Curious? Check the link, go back and read the run of Cultist comics and see who you think they are.
3. In the meantime, here is the next clue: Cultist #1 (the arcane one) and Cultist #2 (the martial one) have both demonstrated that they have an intense hatred of the demigod Iuz. In fact they have canonically worked to oppose him in the past, yet neither have actually made that much of a difference against the Old One. That's all I'm saying this week sorry! More next time!
