Greyhawkery Comics: Under #31

Welcome again adventurers! Last time on my short story, Under, the minions of Sallara the drow were beaten by the heroic allies of Vaelindra the elf and the deep gnome's friends. The deep gnome sent his friends away, seemingly back to Underhold while he stayed behind to help Vaelindra and her party answer some questions concerning their quest. Things move fast from here; there is only 7 issues left. Enjoy!

p.s. Check out the latest Cultists comic as I continue to post two a week until after my trip next week to Gary Con

Greyhawkery Comics: Cultists #31

Welcome again to a new installment of the Cultists of Tharizdun as they make their way into the famous Steading of the Hill Giant Chief. One of my absolute favorite things in this classic module and probably in all of D&D lore, is the random chart for giant bag contents. This is something the 5E accessory, ahem, Bigby Presents Glory of the Giants does well in adding to the flavor and unique contents of giant bags. At any rate, how did the Cultists get inside the steading? Looks like stealth of course! Enjoy!

p.s. Be sure to check my short story Under as I am still posting two comics a week until after Gary Con next week.

Greyhawkery Comics: Cultists #28

Howdy Greyhawkers! It's time for another Cultists comic and in this one the guys are finishing up with their speed run of Maure Castle. Check the links below to catch up on their explorations. By now the Cultists are quite familiar with the guardian demon Kerzit and everything involving him. Have they finally had enough? Did they get what they came for? Let's see. Enjoy!

p.s. be sure to check out my other comic Under this week. I am running two strips a week until after Gary Con 2026.

New Greyhawk Map: Perrenland Campaign

Hello Greyhawk friends! No comic this week but coming back from Garycon 2025 I am pleased to share a new map I worked on for my current 5.5E home campaign set in Perrenland! This map took more planning to execute than actual time to finish. Referencing Anna Meyer's 576 CY map, I got sucked into the rabbit hole of Living Greyhawk place names. The Germanic-Dutch naming conventions were too good to pass on, so in my map I have included 90% of what Anna has used. I will develop my own info on these places however as the game evolves. I used a pad of hex paper I acquired from Allan Grohe at Black Blade Publishing during Garycon 2024. This paper is huge, 17" x 22". I wanted a 5 mile per hex scale but by Pelor Perrenland and the Yatils is so spread out! In order to get MOST of the playable area on this map (I wanted as much of Lake Quag as possible), I tilted the paper to the right as you can see from the north arrow. Someday I'll get Krestible and the Mounds of Dawn onto an adjoining map. The map was drawn in pencil, inked by hand and digitally colored. I feel it's the best map I've done since my South Seas map. If you want a copy, you'll have to save them from this post. The first map below is done at 72 dpi, the other is at 144 dpi. Until next time, enjoy!

**update 3/27/2025** By suggestion I have added a 144 DPI black and white base map. Enjoy!

My GaryCon XV Recap

Greetings Greyhawk friends! I am back and with a quick report of my time at GaryCon XV at Lake Geneva, WI. This is my 5th time going in person, COVID notwithstanding. Last year we were still coming out of the pandemic, masks were a must, but now we've moved on and the con is stronger than ever. Let's get into it...

Me and my best buddies Jayson and Eric (who I've gamed with for nearly 40 years) headed upstate on Wednesday evening. We rolled in too late to hit the con proper and get badges though, so we slept early. Lesson #1 for those going for the first time, the con doesn't officially start until Thursday, but you can pick up badges the day before if you get there early. It saves some time standing in line. The weather was quite nice overall.

On Thursday we got to our actual hotel and took the trolley to the Grand Geneva. Lesson #2 for those aspiring to go to Gary Con, pay for the gold badge because you get a week head start to get closer accommodations and sign up for games. Or you can do what a lot of my Greyhawk colleagues like Anna Meyer do, and volunteer to work the con, this will get you there early and better chance of closer hotel rooms. Anyhoo, as I am neither there to work on my vacation, nor worried about getting in exclusive games, I arrive later than normal. Kudos to all my friends who do put in the time to make Gary Con a wonderful time for all us slackers! We ran to the vendor hall for a bit, and first place I like to hit up is Black Blade Publishing and talk to Allan "Grodog" Grohe. I bought some new larger hex paper from him, so expect some wild maps from me in the coming months. (more on that later). I also got to give a shout out to this advertisement at Allan's booth. It is Hounds of Oerth by the inimitable Carlos Lising and various authors for his latest charity effort. Be sure to go to Casl Entertainment, download Hounds of Oerth and please donate to this worthy cause.

As a side note, Gary Con had a deal worked out to screen the new D&D Movie Honor Among Thievesonce a day. I did not take part in this exclusive event, because me and the guys already had an early showing of it back home. My short move review is that it is major fun, and worthy of a sequel. I had lowered my expectations after the last movie 20 years ago, but this time they made one with some heart. I can't wait to see it at home so I can try to hunt for movie easter eggs. Good times.

Another astounding thing about Gary Con XV was the number of celebrities keeps growing each year. This year, I either spoke to or saw Vince Vaughn, Todd Stashwick, Tom Morello, Paul White aka Big Show, and of course Joe Manganiello. Then there is all the author and artist celebs that I geek over, such as Jeff Easley, Larry Elmore, Margaret Weis, Zeb Cook, Darlene, and Erol Otus. I also made sure to get a picture with the legendary Ed Greenwood who has always been fun to interact with in the past and now is incredibly a regular among the Greyhawk community, often featuring on Lord Gosumba streams. I've been to several Gen Cons over the years and never saw this many cool celebs all at once and in such proximity. Gary Con is small and intimate, but not a place where it's overly mobbed with people. I can't wait to see who else shows next year!

Thursday afternoon I was fashionably late to the 2nd annual Legends & Lore stream from Gary Con. Anna, Jay Scott and myself showed off a lot of upcoming projects in the Greyhawk community. We took a wild variety of questions from the audience, many who were new to the show, but no less enthusiastic to banter about all things Greyhawk. Special shout out to Eric Menge and Roger Moore for attending and lending their expert commentary as well! At the end of the seminar, I handed out print copies of a new Sea Princes map I created for this con. It's a partially "burned" map that one might find in a chest or on a pirate ship. Download this map at this link for the full-size version and put it to good use!

On Thursday night me and my pals got invited to a pick-up game of 5E Ravenloft ran by the amazing DM Dave from the Twitch stream Guild Superior. This game was incredible in that he hosted over ten of us through his rendition of Curse of Strahd, starting as 0-level Barovian kids, to 5th level seasoned adventurers, and fast forwarding to 9th level heroes. It was quite the concept for a one-shot adventure and those of us who hung in there until 2am fighting Strahd did not leave disappointed (no help from me as I could not roll over a 10 to save my life).

Kudos to Dave for putting on such a good game, and a shout out to my Barovian childhood friends, Anna, Scott, Jayson, Eric, Chris, Rob, Karl, Bob, Josh, and Chad.

Friday morning, I played some Dungeon Crawl Classics and only lost 3 out of my 4 characters! I later caught Anna Meyer and Alysa Faden's mapping seminar. Jay as always was manning the controls so the two could regale us with their mapping projects past and present. I regret however that I didn't catch their party with Troll Lord Games to announce the Free City of Altimira Boxed Set project. There's just so much to do at Gary Con and so little time.

Friday evening me and my crew took part in our second Legends of Roleplaying D&D tourney. Last year we finished top 5 out of over a dozen tables, this year the theme was a return to the Temple of Elemental Evil, and well, we didn't do so hot finishing 9th overall. I was no help in that my elven thief got blown up by explosive runes. Timed games can make you do foolish things. This brings to mind lesson #3, crowded gaming halls are LOUD. So, get there early and sit close to the GM! At any rate, congrats to the winners of this tournament, I heard after the fact there is a trophy that is being passed on each, kinda like the Stanley Cup. I was dismayed after our game, but now I'm back on the horse!
Saturday morning started out iffy for me. Up to this point Wisconsin weather was being pleasant but then BOOM we had six inches of snow overnight! I was up early and was cleaning the car off like I was in a hurry to get to work or something. Luckily my friends didn't panic like me, and we stayed long enough to see it melt down later that afternoon as we finished with a game of Mutant Crawl Classic by Goodman Games. Fun stuff, it reminds me of old school Gamma World. That was all we had scheduled for Gary Con however since we planned to leave afterward. We made one more run through the con, dealer room and halls, then the most important thing before heading back to Illinois, we got Wisconsin cheese! Accept no substitutes. So yes, I missed a good 1.5 days of convention time, but really it was the best con I ever attended. I did everything I set out to do. There were so many people I met from streams and the community, and I got to game with so many people for the first time. If I missed anyone, I will catch you in 2024!

Greyhawkery Pause

Welcome back Greyfolk, and thank you for continuing to read Greyhawkery. This post is a short announcement that I'm hitting the pause button for March leading into Gary Con 2023. Maybe interacting with some of my favorite people in the community will inspire me to do some new content. I'll still be chatting Greyhawk Wednesdays on Legends & Lore stream and gaming 1d3 times a week. While you are waiting for me to write something clever, please check out some of my friends' Greyhawk blogs:

Wars of Greyhawk: Gahru's Folly

Greetings loyal fans of Greyhawk! GREYHAWKERY is alive. (or is it undead?) At any rate my hiatus is over, and for those of you who are with me at GaryCon 2022 I'm sure it's been wonderful celebrating our favorite setting together in person again. So, I need to explain that this post starts my new blogging model. I will not be posting at the same rate as before, I intend to post at least once a week (maybe to coincide with my weekly Legends & Lore streams on Twitch. Content-wise I probably won't be promoting D&D products and news as much as before either. I am going to try to focus on some new original material. So, expect new stuff from the 576 CY Sea Princes campaign, Ull (of course), maybe some 5E creations, and finally, some entries in my long-overdue Wars of Greyhawk series.

Wars of Greyhawk will cover many of the famous (or less well known) battles in the history of the Flanaess. Believe me, there is ALOT of them so no promises on how many I will do for now. My original article on the Battle of Emridy Meadows was just the start, now I'm pleased to present this gem from Dragon #63: Gahru's Folly. Enjoy!

Battle of Gahru’s Folly (or Grandwood’s Grandest)

Conflict & Date:
The Battle of Gahru’s Folly occurred during the dozenmonth of Wealsun in 578 CY.

Armies & Commanders:

Grandwood Rebels (5,000 total)

2,000 light infantry, 100 crossbows, 850 archers (and slingers), 2,000 sylvan elves.

*****

Censorial Army of Medegia (7,000 total)

    Captain-General Gahru of Medegia.

1,700 light infantry, 300 medium cavalry, 4,000 orcs, 1,000 goblins.

Result:

The Censorial Army of Medegia is trapped and decisively routed by the Grandwood Rebels.

Casualties:

Grandwood Rebels (250 total)

165 light infantry, 15 crossbows, 50 archers, 20 sylvan elves

*****

Censorial Army of Medegia (4,900 total)

    Captain-General Gahru (missing, presumed dead)

900 light infantry, 100 medium cavalry, 3,300 orcs, 600 goblins (no humanoids were taken alive)

Prelude

A): In 578 CY, Holy Censor Spidasa named an Imperial Constable by the Malachite Throne, was keen to appease the Overking by aiding his goal to smash the Iron League, while at the same time gaining more territory for his Holy See before their rival the South Province. Though his best Censorial troops remained behind at Mentery and Pontylver, the Holy See began amassing forces for a campaign to invade the County of Sunndi through the well-defended Hestmark Highlands and Glorioles mountains.

B): Part of the forces for this risky campaign was drawn from the Censorial Army stationed on the west bank of the Mikar River within the southern bounds of the Grandwood Forest. Led by the zealous Captain-General Gahru, it fell on this army to defend the Holy See (and by extension Rel Astra) against raids by human and elven “rebels” sympathetic to the Iron League, who dwelled in the deep Grandwood. The Censorial Army numbered 5,000 humanoids, and 2,000 humans (mostly levies and a contingent of 300 medium cavalry). This camped force was always large enough to patrol the river border, with humanoids employed mainly to conduct counter-raids. Indeed, up until low-summer of 578 CY, it had never been directly attacked.

Battle

C): In the month of Wealsun, a gathered force of roughly 1,000 sylvan elves and allied woodsmen suddenly advanced on the camp, close enough to alert and allow Captain-General Gahru time to muster his entire army. Gahru was convinced he could crush the rebels in the field (and some say he was eager to show a major victory to Censor Spidasa), so his army spilled from the camp and went on the offensive. The rebels had anticipated the Captain-General’s reaction. So, by using a series of planned feints and skirmishing retreats, they were able to draw the Censorial Army far away from their encampment and deeper into the forest to a well-laid trap about 4 leagues to the west.

D): The trap consisted of two phases. First, the main body of the Censorial Army was lured to an area of nearly impassable terrain (the bottom of a large ravine it is speculated). Here, well-placed units of nearly 2,000 more sylvan elves and men were readied for an ambush from the high ground and surrounding canopy. Captain Gahru’s troops had become closely bunched in this killing-zone; the vanguard of humanoids grinding to a halt, while the human Censorial forces in the rear kept pressing the chase from behind. By the time Captain-General Gahru ordered his forces to turn about, it was too late, and the trap was sprung. Missiles from bow, sling, and crossbow rained upon the Censorial Army creating a panic. This is when phase two of the trap was initiated.

E): A reserve of 2,000 forester infantry emerged from hiding at the rear as the Censorial Army was already in a complete rout. The rebels pursued the fleeing forces back to the banks of the Mikar; it was presumed the Censorial camp was burned and looted in the days after the massacre.

Aftermath

F): Early reports to Mentery showed that about 400 human Censorial troops survived, however later that month, stragglers and released captives brought the total to 950. The sylvan elves made sure no humanoid prisoners were taken, and those goblins and orcs who survived that day scattered in other directions, some crossing into Rauxes or Rel Astran lands. For his part, Captain-General Gahru went missing and was presumed slain by the Holy See.

G): As the battle would be later called by bards, “Gahru’s Folly” or “Grandwood’s Grandest” dealt a serious blow to the Censor’s plans for a southern campaign. With the Grandwood border in turmoil, Spidasa was forced to make a controversial pact with Drax, the Mayor of Rel Astra. In return for the Holy See’s support of Rel Astra’s continued independence from the Malachite Throne, Drax agreed to bolster new Censorial forces along the forest’s borders. The Rel Astran contingent of about 3,000 would include many humanoids who were at Gahru’s Folly, a fact that made their commanders reconsider venturing deep into the Grandwood.

H): Meanwhile in Rauxes, the Overking took the news of the Captain-General’s defeat just as hard. To end this threat, Ivid began to coordinate with the Holy See with the intention of sending an Imperial force led by General Banwald to flush out the troublesome forest denizens, and hopefully catch them in a pincer movement with Censorial and Rel Astran forces coming from the Mikar once again. The Grandwood rebels would not fall for any such large-scale operation however, instead remaining mobile enough to evade detection within the dense forest. Thus, the decisive distraction of Gahru’s Folly continued to benefit the member states of the Iron League.

Heroic Hooks

DMs who wish to feature the battle of Gahru’s Folly for their own campaign should note this event takes place two years after the starting timeline of the World of Greyhawk boxed set, and six years before the published events of Greyhawk Wars. The following hooks are suggested for DMs who want to have player characters affect the events of Gahru’s Folly without necessarily reenacting the entire battle.

Reconnaissance: It’s the day before the trap is to be set. The heroes are an advance scouting party to find what troop strengths, leadership and possible patrols are around the Mikar river camp. Stealthy PCs are advised here. If a captive is taken, then interrogation skills will be handy.

Skirmishing party: Your party has been sent ahead to the Censorial Army camp to harass their forces and draw them into the Grandwood toward the planned ambush. There are too many enemies to fight overall, so the PCs will need to be mobile and fast to make sure no opposing skirmishers can outflank the rebel's army until they reach the ambush site.

Reserve ambush party: The rebels have brought the fight to the characters! The Censorial Army is routing from a storm of missile fire. Due to their formidable skills, the PCs are specially tasked with taking down Captain-General Gahru and his mounted guards before they can get away.

Got Them on the Run: The orcs and goblins in Gahru’s doomed army know the forest almost as well as the sylvan elves, which makes them dangerous even when they rout. One large unit is making their escape and are headed towards a woodsman encampment. The heroes have to make sure this splinter group doesn’t cause any damage.

Old Greyhawk Ads in Dragon

Greetings all and welcome back to Greyhawkery! As I write this post, we are going through another Virtual Gary Con 2021, and the gaming and streaming for the World of Greyhawk has never been more successful. While the community games into the future, I've been nostalgically looking back to the past to muse on how far this setting has come. My favorite source is the pages of Dragon where one can see the evolution and even launch of the products we all now take for granted. Sit back and read some clipped advertisements I found from this hallowed magazine. Enjoy!

I think it's safe to say Saga of Old City is Gygax's best and first novel set in Greyhawk. The Gord series held a lot of promise as it came out around the time D&D novels was red hot, especially the Dragonlance series. Because of this, Saga got a big push back in winter 1984/1985. This full page, color ad was evocative enough to grab readers.

In winter of 1986, Gygax put out his second novel in the Gord series with Artifact of Evil. It's too bad that he would have to finish the series post-TSR. Look at that retail price!

Here's an old school ad from Dragon #37. Again, Gary went all out with a full color ad in his usually all black & white magazine. To give us a taste of the Greyhawk Folio cover would've been a treatment back in 1980.

In contrast, this ad in Dragon #80 for the updated 1983 World of Greyhawk boxed set is disappointingly small, black and white and just has a nice blurb to hook you into buying it. I scoured the back issues for a full page color ad of this boxed set and couldn't find it. If anyone knows, let me know. I assume if one already had the Folio, this small ad would be enough to remind you. I had neither Dragon #80 nor the Folio. It is merely fate that I'm here today as a lifelong Greyhawk gamer.

This ad from Dragon #94 in 1985 is fun one. G1-2-3 Against the Giants is one of the first modules I ever owned, but damn if I had saw this ad, well I could've had that mod and even more if I just bought a hardback D&D book. I highly doubt a sale like this will happen again.

This blurb is from the coming soon section of Dragon #112. What is shocking to me about this ad, is that the Queen of the Spiders was supposedly linked to the Temple of Elemental Evil and Slave Lords series?!? That's an adventure path on steroids. I cannot imagine running one PC group through 15 modules. I know there will some Greyhawk grognards who eschew this proposed storyline. Perhaps the ad department of TSR just wanted to push sales of the modules by tying them all together. D&D players are collectors and would have to get an entire story. Maybe they were right, because as we saw in 2E going forward, storylines were not as closely tied together so some inevitably ended up more popular than others.

Speaking of the Temple of Elemental Evil, this last ad here is from Dragon#100 (coincidentally the issue that debuted Gord) and is for the compiled T1-4 TOEE super-module that is referenced above. Again, the ad is black & white, but it is well made and much more evocative. It takes hints of the gargoyles on Keith Parkinson's amazing cover and throws in some hype text to catch your attention. This would entice me to get the Temple since I never owned the original mods. I am curious that the blurb says this is the "conclusion" to the T-series. Does this Frank Mentzer supermod have story info Gygax's books doesn't? You'll have to get them all to find out I guess!

Ethereal GaryCon 2021

Howdy Greyhawk faithful! Just a quick post to remind that next week is Gary Con 2021. Unfortunately it's virtual yet again due to the pandemic, but the Ethereal version goes on! Registration has already begun, so if you haven't got your tickets for these virtual games, hurry up before they are all taken. Mind you if your favorite games are all taken, many Greyhawk games will still be streamed live on the conventions dedicated Greyhawk channel. Look for the schedule of events on the Con website. Way to represent! Check out the streams here:

GaryCon Greyhawk

I had intended to go to the physical version of Gary Con this year, and so by converting my badge to the virtual con, I got some nice swag out of the deal. Look here.

The dice are oversized and printed bold for old eyes like mine. There is no d20 though, the 20-sider is actually a double d10. Weird, but okay! The Gary Con tin has a nice set of d6's. You can never have too many of those. The book Cyclopean Deeps was the bonus item. Every swag box has a different book from what I've seen. This one is Cthulhuian, so good to have. The best part is the Dungeoneers Survival Quill. It does it all, writes, stylus, measures, has a built in level, and more I'm sure. Okay that's for all. Have fun at Ethereal Gary Con, and I'll chat with you all then!

Ring of Five Questions: Round 5

Greeting Greyhawk faithful. If you've
been following, this is the fifth round of my ongoing Return of the Ring of Five Questions column! If you're coming into this column for the first time this is a community participation feature of Greyhawkery. Go back and read the previous installments then email me at mortellan@gmail.com with your five responses. Remember, you can be as short or wordy as you like in these responses. Also, I will keep taking entries until the end of 2020 so hang in there, I will get to your answers eventually!
Now, let's jump into the Ring, this round I am putting two of my very best Greyhawk friends up for your entertainment; Carlos Lising of Casl Entertainment is among many community contributions, a producer of amazing adventure modules and a Greyhawk streamer on Twitch. Then there is Jayson King who has been my best friend and brother since well, forever and he is my longest running player having been involved in every one of my Greyhawk campaigns. Jayson has contributed to Canonfire before, we were both on the podcast Gamerstable and he is best known on Greyhawkery as the player of the famous barbarian hero Valkaun Dain. All three of us have hung out, ate, drank and gamed together, and despite Carlos being a Blackhawks fan, Jayson and me still like him! But enough pleasantries, let's see how these two really match up! Enjoy.

Q1. What is your favorite realm or region in the World of Greyhawk setting?
Carlos: Fireland, outside of the Flanaess. Perrenland, within it.

Jayson: Rhizia, the whole Thillonrian Peninsula. I’ve sailed it’s fjords and climbed its mountains so many times in my imagination that I know it well. My DM, my good friend Mike Bridges aka Mortellan, let me put my stamp on it in our campaign. It was my own corner of the map.

Good ol Carlos and Fireland, his vision of that place far exceeds anything I've done with Ull. Someday you'll see what I mean! Now Perrenland I can get behind, knowing him like I do, he really likes the modules set in/around the Yatils. Speaking of Suel barbarian culture, Jayson and I have indeed used the peninsula, mainly through his PCs Vorlag and Valkaun, waging wars often, and he had creative license for that corner of the map. For example, check out Jayson's power group the Night Shadows.

Q2. If you could actually be one Greyhawk deity which one would it be?
Carlos: It's hard to relate to the gods from a mortal perspective. So I would probably pick a Demigod or Hero-God. Maybe Rudd?  I like her portfolio. Otherwise...Tharizdun. As bleak as it is, all things eventually bow to entropy.

Jayson: Kelanen, the Prince of Swords. Only a “Hero-God” but he’s so cool. Hangs with Zagig, Heward, Murlynd, Keoghtom, to capture Iuz? Sign me up!

Tharizdun How poetic. I'll pretend I didn't see that lol. I do find it fun that Carlos wants to be Rudd and Jayson picked Kelanen. I suddenly want to run a one-shot team-up with those two playing the hero-deities. It would have to be an epic level scenario of course. But who would be the villain, hmmm.

Q3. You have one wish. Which Greyhawk module or accessory would you do over or fix?
Carlos: Heh. Essentially, I AM doing them over!  ;) Gimme a crack at Q1. That's such a bad ending to a legendary series.

Jayson: I hated the intended ending of the Five Shall be One, but good ol Mike made it better. I’d love to play the Greyhawk Ruins (WGR1) again. We had a blast with it back in the day.

Ah yes WGR1, we played that cover to cover (minus a spelljammer). Jayson is definitely right that FSBO had a terrible payoff (nevermind the Greyhawk Wars). When I rebooted it for the Sea Princes I think that gave the Blades of Corusk a new purpose. If you're curious, find the links in my Best of Greyhawkery at the top. Carlos of course would know something about taking old material and making it his own. His take on Markessa is the stuff of legend. You can find her module series and more on his Casl Entertainment link at the top of the post. I never ran Q1 for Jayson so he probably doesn't relate to Carlos' disappointment. However, maybe a re-write by Carlos into a stand-alone module could make it palatable.

Q4: You're putting together an all-star Greyhawk NPC group. Who is your number one pick?
Carlos: It's attractive to say Mordenkainen, but that's a sucker pick.  Far too unreliable.  Instead, give me Gwydiesin of the Cranes.  A 30th level Bard with a staggering array of magical items, aligned with the cause of good?  I can live with that.

Jayson: Knight Stalker - Mike’s nPC creation that was a badass. He used uzi’s and MAC-10’s, had a tri-bladed sword and, for a little while anyway, Excalibur. He was not a good guy, as the name implies, but he got the job done. He’d destroy Robilar, Quij and all of these other poseurs you other guys keep mentioning. I said what I said.

Carlos does appreciate the Sargent era and I'm sure he will be the only person to pick Gwydiesin a member of the obscure Johydee's Children. I wonder if Carlos' extended team would be the other Children? At any rate that's definitely an inspired choice for a #1 pick. 30th level Bard, not bad, but looks like Jayson's calling out my old PC/NPC Stalker, a fighter 35/ thief 5, you can read about this monty haul character from our youth here. Yeah our campaigns tended to get high level from 1E era all the way through 3rd edition. I'm guessing Jayson picked my guy because Valkaun would want KS on his side instead of against him! And yes, the tri-blade sword Jayson mentioned IS that sword.

Q5. If you could possess one artifact or relic from Greyhawk lore, which would it be?
Carlos: First: Let me go on record as saying I want NONE of them. Artifacts are far too dangerous and their side effects too onerous for my tastes. That said, if I had to choose...give me the Helm and Wand of Lynerden the Spinner (from Ivid the Undying). They came from a mage of goodly demeanor..so I'm hoping they won't wreck me TOO badly (plus, that Limited/Full Wish ability is awfully nice...).

Jayson: The Invulnerable Coat of Arnd. It would go well with Blackrazor, which a character of mine, Zholtan Bedlam, currently possesses. Can’t wait to get back to that campaign.

True facts, Jayson's character has been unstoppable with Blackrazor. Now he wants an Invulnerable Coat too? Bahahaha. Zholtan Bedlam eh? I think I found a villain for my Rudd-Kelanen game! A lot of people however do seem to want Arnd's Coat IRL. Count me in. Finishing off this enjoyable round of the Ring, Carlos goes to Ivid once again for an obscure set of artifacts I'm sure few have used (including me). He would be aghast if Jayson was an unkillable machine with a soul-sucking sword, so I hope he could put his Good artifacts to use and wish the Invulnerable Coat and Blackrazor away! ;)

Well folks, I'm exhausted and embarrassed. Carlos has seen how over the top I run my games, and Jayson now has some new ideas. Greaaaat. Stop in again folks, as two more people will enter the Ring!

Greyhawk News and Links

Howdy Greyhawk maniacs. It's that time of the week I throw out a few links to help promote Greyhawk content in the community. I'm sure you've seen most of these items already, but help me by boosting the signal. We need to keep awareness of the setting high in this new golden age of D&D fandom.

First and foremost is the exciting news that old-school publisher Goodman Games gets to do another 5E adaptation of a Greyhawk classic in OAR#6: The Temple of Elemental Evil. This is not an homage, or a mere reprint, but in the spirit of previous releases like Expedition to the Barrier Peaks and the Into the Borderlands, this is a full 5E adaptation alongside a reprint of the original AD&D super-module T1-T4. These books end up pretty weighty, but in my opinion it's a must have. Goodman's press release says this will be out late 2020 or early 2021. I'm guessing it'll be in time for Gary Con 2021, which is where I will snag a copy!

Next, over at the blog Hall of the Mountain King, my fellow Legends & Lore historian, Jason Zavoda has been putting out posts galore. Zavoda is famous for his Greyhawk Index of course, but when he stopped indexing years ago, the content didn't stop. Since he has been more active in the community, Jason has been indexing Greyhawk references in both recent products like the Saltmarsh Encounters and relatively older ones like Dungeon Magazine #148 which featured Spinecastle.

Jason has also tirelessly been posting regular updates on his Blackmoor, Land of a Thousand Witches, a campaign in this region unlike any you've seen before and the final chapter in his ongoing fiction The Hill Giant's Chief: Nosnra's Saga. Tune in daily to see what tidbit JZ posts next on his blog!

Lastly, speaking of Legends & Lore, this Wednesday, Jay Scott, Anna Meyer and myself will be hosting special guests from former Living Greyhawk's Sultanate of Zeif region. Even after having many members of Living Greyhawk on the show previously, I cannot wait to hear how there people played and developed their stories in the Baklunish lands. Also, I cannot wait to mercilessly taunt them about my homeland of Ull! See you there, or if you can't make the live show see the replay through LordGosumba's regular channel.

New Greyhawk Stuff to See

Well met Greyhawkers! Fresh off our Virtual Gary Con seminar on Twitch, I have a few links to share for more creative stuff to read on the internet. Those who were present that day probably have already been to these sites, but I gotta keep plugging away. Let's get to it!

Joe Bloch over at Greyhawk Grognard does it again, this time he has a new must have download titled T5: Beneath the Temple of Elemental Evil. What is T5 all about? Joe writes:

"The first in my series of expansions/addenda/replacements for the classic T1-4 Temple of Elemental Evil, and the GDQ Giants/Drow modules is finally here.
Based on literally years of research and speculation here on the blog, this first module is an expansion to the Temple of Elemental Evil, detailing a (real) shrine to the Elder Elemental God far below the Temple dungeons..."

If you are a fan of the classic Temple you will have to see what Joe has in store with this publication and what surely is left to come. No one ponders and improves on the classics like Greyhawk Grognard!
Next up, as promised is the newest issue, Oerth Journal #32 now available for download over at Greyhawk Online. This issue the theme is "Infinite Oerths" and here is the line up of authors and articles:

Lastly, head over to Greyhawk Stories to read Thomas Kelly's incredible interview with Paul Kidd the author of a trilogy of Greyhawk novels starring his unique character, the Justicar. If anyone had a chance to get a Greyhawk novel line going post-Gygax it was Kidd. Go over and check this article out, you'll want go out and find a copy of White Plume Mountain or Queen of the Demonweb Pits
Kudos to Mr. Kelly on this coup of an interview!

900th Greyhawk Post!

Welcome friends and fans of Greyhawk! Today's post is extra special because it's my 900th doing Greyhawkery, I've always kept a modest posting schedule, like 2-3 a week so getting to this point has been a marathon instead of a race for me. What to do to celebrate 900? Well, I wish it had been Gary Con 12, but since it got cancelled due to COVID-19, instead let's start by throwing out these ads for Virtual Gary Con!

Yes indeed, Gary Con carries on! These dual streams will include myself, Anna Meyer and Jay Scott, plus all our Greyhawk friends and colleagues as originally planned. Should be a good time. Please stop in and watch or at least throw us some follows on these dates. Also keep an eye out for the release of Oerth Journal #32 on Greyhawk Online!

Now that the present is taken care of, let's get nostalgic. In 900 posts I've done a TON of Greyhawk themed subjects. If you check the tabs at the top of the page you can see some of my "best" articles as well as links to many comics I've featured on Greyhawkery. Speaking of comics, the graphic novel Castle Greyhawk by Scott Casper and drawn by me, has been a central reason why my blog has lasted this long! The comic (ending in 2019) can still be found here, and I hope in the future Scott can make the print version available to more fans online through Patreon or some other way. My gratitude to Scott for his writing and art direction on this project is boundless. Though I've not hardly done any art (besides maps) since the end of Castle Greyhawk, I did manage to draw this piece to dedicate to Scott. Hey buddy, go ahead and use this graphic if you'd like, it's all for you!
For those who haven't read the comic, these three were among the main characters of the story: top to bottom is Tenser (mage of course), Ehlissa (also mage) and Yrag (fighter). What is in store for me artwise? Well I still do an occasional Cultist of Tharizdun comic strip for Oerth Journal. If you want to see me at my most maniacal and trivial, then read the entire Cultist run.

I have done many maps, interviews, scholarly studies, lists, I've featured my Ull and Sea Princes campaign material here for several years and of course I've promoted the works of many other content creators in the community. In this time I've also had some lulls and thoughts of hanging up the blog, but I always kept going for you, my readers. So if Greyhawkery is new to you, spend some time looking around, I GUARANTEE there is something you'll find that's useful for your games or a tidbit of lore you never knew, or just something nonsensical to amuse you. For now I'll try to keep it going until post #1000! Enjoy!

Update 06/27/2021: 1000 posts. Mission accomplished.
